Obesity surgery is strictly regulated in Belgium. It will only be refunded if the following conditions are met:
- Minimum age is 18 years
- You have been seriously overweight for at least 5 years
- You have a BMI of >40
OR > 35 with:- diabetes,
- sever high blood pressure (140/90 mmHg despite 3 high blood pressure medicines),
- obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS),
- or after a previous weight loss surgery
- You are well motivated to change your behavior.
- You have been on a documented diet. Attempts to lose weight must have been made in the past under professional supervision (i.e. you have been under professional supervision for at least 6 months in the past 5 years)
- Approval by a multidisciplinary team (surgeon, psychologist, endocrinologist, dietician, …)
